Worldmail 2.x .msg vs. .new

I know this isn't tech support, but any help would be great

I have one account that has inssue getting e-mail delivered. I've noticed that in the accounts mailbox folder the files are changed from .new to .msg. What is the diff in the files and why would they be changed?
