I'm sorry if I appear to be pedantic, but this senario does not occur when I am using Outlook Express or Windows Live Mail!

(or what "proprietary" connection to a "Hotmail/Live" account?) Go to your Gmail account directly (if possible), and send a message to yourself, using it directly, which should provide a hint that the "conversation" issue itself is not tied to any particular remote client, although it may certainly depend on what server you use, what login you use, perhaps what exact "From:" info, or something which may still differ, even between two instances of the same client. "Show original" (using Gmail web interface) tells you everything about a message; comparing between any two sources (which attempt to send identical messages, for example) should reveal any essential differences, such as whose SMTP server originated the message. When using IMAP, which is more complex than POP, one could conceive of differences in synchronizing, use of flags, or in which messages are displayed, which might then be an independent issue. Unfortuately I do not have a direct gmail account, I access the service via Virgin Media. Therefore I can't really carry out the tests you suggest.
I don't want to set up a proper gmail account just for this purpose as it could add another level of complication. As I mentioned before, the system is useable with a couple of small workarounds. As you say. IMAP is more complicated than POP, but it is useful to be able to see all my messages from multiple computers. Thanks anyway for the time you have spent trying to help me. Have you tried going directly to gmail.com
and entering your full email address and its password? Does Virgin's "webmail" look like Gmail, and have "conversations" like Gmail? If so, it may actually be Gmail :) |

Have you tried going directly to gmail.com
and entering your full email address and its password? Yes, but you have to create a new account *@googlemail.com [Does Virgin's "webmail" look like Gmail, and have "conversations" like Gmail? If so, it may actually be Gmail ![]() It is built on gmail, and does have conversations, but you doesn't have the "Show original" button that you mention. So you can't really get inside the messages to see what's going on. If you're interested, you can have a look here:http://mail.virgin.net/mail |

Q: It is built on gmail, and does have conversations,
but doesn't have the "Show original" button that you mention. A: When you open a message, is there a "Reply" button, to the immediate right of the message date and time? Is there a "down-arrow" to the immediate right of that? When you click that arrow, is "Show original" one of the menu items? I can not log in at Virgin, because I have no account at that ISP. |

Yes it's all there. They keep it well hidden though!
I'll have to do some tests. I might not be on here for a couple of days, but I'll let you know what I find out. |
