Hi all
I have been running Eudora since about 1996 and am presently using 7.1. When I thought it would be a good idea to update to version 8.0 I found that the update wizard simply sat there with two green bars and seemed not to go any further. Deciding that I had a lot of emails to update and that it would take a little time to transfer the files from 7.1 to 8.0 I left it to manage by itself. Nearly two hours later nothing had progressed, but control alt delete told me that wizard was still running! Eh? I doubted that and ceased the update. Probably a bad move as when I went to re-start Eudora there was nothing but two folders, in and out. Everything else was gone. Oh dear. What to do? Fortunately I still had 7.1 in 'My Documents' and also had back-up on a separate disk from the night before, so backing up and re-loading 7.1 brought everything back up again. But, very, very scary. I wouldn't like to go through that again. Does anyone have any similar experience or perhaps can explain why all this happened. I mean, nearly two hours for the wizard to transfer the files from 7.1 to 8.0 seems rather ridiculous. Cheers |

Where did you get your "Eudora 8" and what did you do while installing it?
"Eudora 8" (still a very raw "beta") is not a continuation of the "Classic" Eudora series, which ended with version 7.1.0.9, but is instead descended from a completely unrelated gene pool -- it is, in fact, a modified, enhanced version of Thunderbird 3! "Eudora 8" wants to install itself, by default, into a program folder which would never before have existed, and after installing, it will look for any existing mail in the default profile which is used by Thunderbird, ignoring where classic Eudora keeps its mail (or any of its other user files, settings, addresses, attachments, etc.) Thus, there is normally no more a conflict between "Eudora 8" and any "Classic" version of Eudora than between Thunderbird and any version of classic Eudora, which are completely independent and unrelated. However, if you installed "Eudora 8" programs into the very same folder where you had your original "Classic" Eudora, and if, even further, you had been keeping your previous classic Eudora mail etc. in that same folder (which is a grave mistake in Vista and Windows 7), you could thereby have clobbered everything. There is another forum which covers the new, Thunderbird-based "Eudora 8" http://eudorabb.qualcomm.com/forumdisplay.php?f=29 and that's where to post anything further about "Eudora 8" Best wishes.
