FAQ: Fix Eudora desktop
Many users report problems with the Eudora desktop which gets messed up and the componets will not go back to where they should be. This is easy to fix. Right clock on the mailbox (signature, personality, signatures etc) display. The dialog shown below will appear. Make sure that Allow Docking is checked and that Float in Main Window is not. Please note that you should NOT later return the setting to Float in Main Window - this should remain disabled as it is use (often accidental) of this setting that creates the problems. If you want to return the toolbar and desktop to their original settings: Close Eudora and then remove the line Commercial32Version=16 in the [settings] section of Eudora.ini. Note: Eudora 6.2.3.4 Added a toolbar/docking/floating window reset mechansim by holding down the Ctrl and Shift keys while doing a toolbar customize (right-click on main toolbar and select Customize). However, there was a problem with this and it only now worked in sponsored mode, and not in Paid mode. However it did work in the 6.2.5.1 Beta and should work on all subsequent versions. FAQ: Sponsored mode unable to get ads?
Sponsored mode unable to get ads? 1. If you have a version of Eudora prior to Eudora 6.2.3.4, update to Eudora 6.2.3.4 or newer http://www.eudora.com/cgi-bin/export...EUDORA_win_623 This version has solved a problem where users would be warned that they were unable to get ads, when Eudora was getting some ads, but not enough. The 6.2.3.4 version has increased the amount of time Eudora allows the user to go without getting ads before warning so that the program has a better chance to get the ads it needs to download. 2. Try these suggestions: http://eudora.com/techsupport/kb/1922hq.html http://eudora.com/techsupport/kb/2196hq.html 3. I have been told: We've worked with dozens and dozens of people and have come to the conclusion that Eudora is doing the right thing. Users simply need to stop preventing ad download and stop deleting the local ad cache..... this is because it is more and more common for users to have firewalls that block ad download all together, or users have an application like Ad-aware that actually goes and deletes the Eudora ad folder. If Eudora is blocked from getting ads by a firewall, or ads are deleted by a misguided anti-spyware program, it is understandable that Eudora warns these users that it cannot get ads. Regarding the Ad-aware issue see: http://eudora.com/techsupport/kb/2220hq.html Simply add the Eudora ad cache at (default location on XP etc.) C:\Documents and Settings\YourUserName\Application Data\Qualcomm\Eudora\EudPriv\Ads to the Ad-aware ignore list. Regarding Agnitum Outpost: if HTML Adblocking is enabled "/ADS.Eudora." will be among the URLs getting blocked. By deleting "/ADS." in the Adblocking list Eudora is able to receive ads. 4. A subscriber discovered (http://eudorabb.qualcomm.com/showpos...ostcount=152): It turns out that the graphic content is rendered by Internet Explorer. As I don't use Internet Explorer normally (I use Firefox as my main browser), I hadn't noticed that IE had a connection set to run through a proxy - something I'd needed when working overseas recently. That proxy is no longer running - so my IE wasn't working, and my pictures didn't get rendered. Neither Eudora nor Firefox pick up those proxy settings, so they were working fine. So the check that Eudora does going to the Picture Server sites needs to be qualified so that it's noted that the check _must_ be done using IE, not your favourite browser. 5. Many firewalls and other applications to protect your system protect your hosts file these days from being hijacked. This protection may have made it impossible for Eudora to add this to your hosts (location in XP: C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc) file 127.0.0.1 jump.eudora.com 127.0.0.1 jump1.eudora.com 6. For the "Something Seems to be Covering the Ad" issue: http://eudorabb.qualcomm.com/showpos...58&postcount=4 7. And now a few words about what I think of Sponsored mode Eudora.....my honest opinion about this is : if Eudora Light isn't enough for you and you need/want what the full version of Eudora has to offer than you should Buy Paid Mode Eudora! If you buy Paid Mode Eudora you get the real program without intruding ads and all upgrades for the next year for 16 US cents pr. day. The next year costs only 11 cents pr. day. And you get 6 free technical support calls with real people on the line within 12 months from your registration. If you opt not to upgrade you have the program to keep - without ads - forever for much less than any other major software program I know. Personally, I find my own time too valuable to waste with ad problems and being annoyed by intrusive advertising compared with the modest price of Eudora. I also think they should drop sponsored mode Eudora and only keep Eudora Light (for "historical" reasons) as an alternative. Perhaps a 30 day trial edition of the Paid mode would be a good idea. Pls. recall that I am not an employee of Qualcomm and I have not received so much as a T-shirt from them. Last edited by Copenhagen; 06-22-2006 at 11:24 PM. |

FAQ: Import from Thunderbird / Pocomail/Incredimail
To import mailboxes from Thunderbird: The Thunderbird Help file writes: How do I export e-mail messages to another mail program or computer? Thunderbird's mail files are in the standard plain text "mbox" format, which almost all mail programs can use or import. Many proprietary mail programs have a function to import from Eudora, which also uses the "mbox" format; this function should read your Mozilla mail files properly. Your mail files are inside your profile (see the Profile Folder), in the Mail and (if you use IMAP) ImapMail folders. Each mail folder (Inbox, Sent, etc.) is stored as two files — one with no extension (e.g. INBOX), which is the mail file itself (in "mbox" format), and one with an .msf extension (e.g. INBOX.msf), which is the index (Mail Summary File) to the mail file. Tell the other program to import mail from the file with no extension. Just copy the Thunderbird mail files and rename them with a .mbx extension and place them in your Eudora Data folder. On WinY2K and XP systems the default location is the C:\\Documents and settings/Your User name/application data/Qualcomm/eudora. There is a report that there may be a problem with attachments. Does anyone know how to solve this? A user suggests: 1. rename Thunderbird's "Local Folders" to "Local_Folders" 2. in Eudora, file->import->advanced->Netscape, browse to select your Thunderbird prefs.js 3. click OK and the import begins. The resulting folder structure in Eudora was a bit messed up in that each mailbox appeared under in a folder of exactly the same name. This was simple enough to fix in Eudora with drag and drop, then delete the superflouous folders. To export the Mozilla Thunderbird Address Book: Select Tools > Address Book from the menu. From the Address Book menu select Tools > Export Choose a location and file name and save as .ldif Eudora can now import this as a Netscape address book. Just point Eudora to where you have saved it. File Menu > Import > Advanced > Netscape Messenger > Please locate your LDIF file > Browse To import mailboxes from Pocomail: http://www.pocomail.com/poco/help/managing.html Here they wrote: The export mailbox function can be accessed from PocoMail Menu - File, Export, Mailbox. You can select from Netscape, Eudora or RFC 822 formats. Many programs support one or both of these formats for importing information, so hopefully, these will meet your export/import needs. Just point Pocomail to export it's mail files in the Eudora format to your Eudora Data folder. On WinY2K and XP systems the default location is the C:\\Documents and settings/Your User name/application data/Qualcomm/eudora. If you are using win3.X, Win9X, ME etc. it is normally the Eudora Program folder C:\\Program Files/Eudora Mail or some such. Exporting Address Books is done by selecting Export from the same PocoMail Menu. You can export to CSV, LDIF and HTML formats. All the same recommendations mentioned in relation to importing information apply as well to exporting information. Export in LDIF format. Eudora can now import this as a Netscape address book. Just point Eudora to where you have saved it. File Menu > Import > Advanced > Netscape Messenger > Please locate your LDIF file > Browse Tony64 provided this information about Incredimail http://eudorabb.qualcomm.com/showthread.php?t=3082 EXPORT YOUR MAILS FROM INCREDIMAIL TO EUDORA (Quick Tutorial) STEPS 1) Before removing IM from your PC, use Incrediconvert and save converted mails in a new file somewhere on your PC. Incrediconvert will automatically convert all existing folders. INCREDICONVERT DOWNLOAD HERE: http://rauno.com/IncrediConvert.zip 2) Open Outlook Express and copy paste each Incrediconvert folder content into a new Outlook Express folder Follow these steps for one folder copy: -open Incredimail converted XYZ folder -select all -drag and drop the whole selected content into the specific Outlook express folder you created 3) Repeat above steps for each Incrediconverted folder 4) Exit Outlook 5) In Eudora select File/Import/Advanced/Outlook Express 6) Browse for DBX files (they are usually are contained in Root Documents and Settings\USER\Local Settings\Application Data\Identities\{4E0C9468-473E-4567-95C7-EA77EC842B39}\Microsoft\Outlook Express {4E0C9468-473E-4567-95C7-EA77EC842B39} is the file name in my PC yours may be different Select the dbx file and click OK You'll get your mails into Eudora ! FAQ: How to To stop new mail arriving from taking focus from other tasks
To stop new mail arriving (during automatic mail checks) from taking focus from reading or composing mail: 1. Don't have any Tools > Options > Getting attention options checked except play a sound. 2. Do not check the Tools > Options > Background Tasks options Bring error window to front or Bring task window to front . If the problem continues, you can use the appropriate version of Microsoft's very useful Tweak Ui Power Toy for your version of Windows: For XP: http://download.microsoft.com/downlo...ertoySetup.exe For Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows ME, and WinY2K: http://download.microsoft.com/downlo...US/Tweakui.exe and find the menu item Prevent Applications from Stealing Focus. But, the Tweak-Ui focus fix suggested is actually just some regisitry settings. [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop] "ForegroundFlashCount"=dword:00000003 "ForegroundLockTimeout"=dword:00030d40 IF (and only IF) you have Windows XP you can use the attached .reg file to accomplish the same thing. However, if you are uncomfortable making manual changes to the Windows Registry, you should refrain from doing so. To use the attached file: Rename the .txt file extension to .reg Click on the file in Windows explorer and agree when asked to merge. Reboot Windows when you have used it. |

FAQ: Eudora crashing immediately upon start?
Is Eudora crashing immediately upon start? Usually this is preceded by Eudora asking permission to rebuild the IN mailbox table of contents. When Eudora is reopened it immediately crashes. This is a common problem these days due to receiving a so-called malformed message. There are various possible causes of these malformed emails. Some are the result of faulty SPAM mailing clients. Some are due to a faulty MAC email client. Some are the result of local or server based anti-virus programs disinfecting a virus infected mail and leaving a damaged remnant. A single malformed (usually empty) message received will choke a Eudora .rcv spool file and crash Eudora requiring user intervention to find and delete this .rcv file. The file provokes Eudora to think that it is necessary to rebuild the mailbox and will repeatedly try to place itself in the mailbox thereafter crashing Eudora immediately when started. As this type of mail is now very common this is a serious issue requiring user intervention. This bug was reported fixed in Eudora 6.2.1.2: Fixed bug where a poorly formatted incoming message could cause Eudora to later think that it needed to rebuild the In mailbox's TOC. Close Eudora and go to your Eudora/spool folder. If you have Windows Y2k/Xp they are in: C:\Documents and Settings\YourUserName\Application Data\Qualcomm\Eudora\spool If you don't know how to see files in the C:\Documents and Settings\YourUserName\Application Data\ folder pls. look here: http://eudorabb.qualcomm.com/showthread.php?t=4077 for the information in the section "Finding the data folder:". There is a spool sub folder for each personality. Examine them all and see it there is a file with the .rcv suffix. Delete this file (or you can move it elsewhere and examine it with Notepad) and then restart Eudora. Let it rebuild the Table of contents and examine the mailbox carefully for empty mails and delete them without opening them. Restart Eudora and it should be alright. If there are many .rcv files left in the spool folder(s) you can use this method from: http://www.eudora.com/techsupport/kb/1735hq.html Open Windows Explorer and look inside the Spool folder in your Eudora folder. If there are any files in it with a .rcv extension, move them into an empty folder. Now try and launch Eudora. If that resolves the problem, one of the messages contained in those .rcv files is causing the crash. Quit Eudora and put some of them back (but not all of them) and restart Eudora. If it does not crash, repeat this with another group of files. If it does crash. Quit Eudora and put some of them back (but not all of them) and restart Eudora. If it does not crash, repeat this with another group of files. If it does crash, one or more of the files you put back is bad. Remove half of them and try again. Repeat this process until you find the culprit. If the above solution does NOT apply for you, pls. consult: http://www.eudora.com/techsupport/kb/1735hq.html http://eudorabb.qualcomm.com/showthread.php?t=4071 Last edited by Copenhagen; 06-22-2005 at 07:38 AM. |

FAQ: Need to move Eudora to a new computer or Backup your Data?
Need to move Eudora to a new computer or Backup your Data? Read this: http://eudora.com/techsupport/kb/1602hq.html Here is a .bat file for various versions of Windows developed at NASA (it's true!) to help you automate backups of your Eudora data. They also have instructions about how to implement it. Make the appropriate adjustments regarding locations on your own drive to the contents. http://www.hq.nasa.gov/office/codec/.../eud_bkup2.htm Another option is Brana's Archive Messages Plugin: http://brana.users.sbb.co.yu/plugins.htm Download: http://brana.users.sbb.co.yu/archive.zip FAQ: http://brana.users.sbb.co.yu/qa.htm NOTE: If your IN or OUT mailbox files have become corrupted, Eudora (starting with Eudora version 6) keeps backup copies for you. These files can be identified by their .001 and .002 extensions. See here: http://eudora.com/techsupport/kb/2651hq.html Last edited by Copenhagen; 08-09-2005 at 07:42 AM. |

FAQ: Crashes? Freezes? Here's help.
a. The most common cause of crashes and freezes is the email scanning features of many Anti-Virus programs - especially Norton and McAfee. Disabling the email scanning feature generally has no influence upon the effectivity of your Anti-Virus protection - you will still be protected by the program's real time protection. If trying this workaround solves your problems, you now know where to ask for help - ie. your antivirus vendor. b. In some cases a built in gigabit Ethernet NIC (especially on Nvidia chipset motherboards) has an advance tab with the "Checksum Offload" option . Try Disabling this option. See image below. c. If you do not find the Moodwatch and Content Concentrator features useful, you should shut them off. Moodwatch uses a lot of resources and there is no reason to waste them unnecessarily. If you do not use the ESP feature, you can also remove the esp plugin in the Eudora Program Files folder and the ESP folder in the Eudora Data folder (usually in Documents and settings). d. Regularly clean the attachment and embedded folders for duplicates of image files downloaded from email newsletters etc. Make sure that you use the Tools > Options > Attachments setting "When message emptied from Trash." If this is on, automatic attachments are deleted from the attachment directory when their corresponding messages are emptied from the trash. e. It is a very good idea to clean up in your Eudora filters. If you have obsolete or duplicate filters, get rid of them and if you have filters you can't recognize, get rid of them. An easy way to attack this is to use a little free utility called Eudora Filter Organizer which is available here: http://www.xs4all.nl/~jvddrift/eufo.zip f. You can resolve many problems by resetting Eudora settings. Doing this DOES NOT remove or change any of your mail account information http://eudorabb.qualcomm.com/showthread.php?t=4073 g. If you have recently removed VPN clients or privacy or security related software like anti-virus software which create Layered Service Providers on your computer you may have damaged your Winsock Stack. This can cause problems which affect Eudora. Try this fix: Use the method below which fits your OS version. If you are on XP SP2, use the second method: 1) (winsock reset for 2k, xp pre sp2, and 2003 pre sp1) If you are not using Win XP SP2 you could use this utility: http://www.tacktech.com/pub/winsockfix/WinsockFix.zip 2) (Winsock reset for xpsp2) type cmd in the Run dialog (above the Start button) in the Dos box type netsh winsock reset enter restart machine. After resetting Winsock, applications which have added themselves to the stack will need to be reinstalled. These may include third-party VPN clients, some McAfee privacy or network security related software, and others--check what is working and what is not. h. If you uninstall Norton Anti-Virus or Security products they break a lot of other stuff, some of which can cause problems for Eudora. Check: http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT...015165236?Open i. Consult these Eudora FAQ's: ---------------------------------------------------------- Crashes Randomly http://www.eudora.com/techsupport/kb/1740hq.html ---------------------------------------------------------- Crashes When Sending Mail http://www.eudora.com/techsupport/kb/1737hq.html --------------------------------------------------------- Crashes When Checking Mail http://www.eudora.com/techsupport/kb/1736hq.html --------------------------------------------------------- Crashes When Opening http://www.eudora.com/techsupport/kb/1735hq.html ----------------------------------------------------------- Crashes When Exiting http://www.eudora.com/techsupport/kb/1738hq.html ----------------------------------------------------------- Crashes When Opening a Certain Mailbox http://www.eudora.com/techsupport/kb/2631hq.html ----------------------------------------------------------- Crashes When Launching a URL or Attachment http://www.eudora.com/techsupport/kb/1739hq.html ----------------------------------------------------------- Crashes - IMAP http://www.eudora.com/techsupport/kb/1741hq.html ----------------------------------------------------------- Crash or invalid page fault http://www.eudora.com/techsupport/kb/901hq.html ----------------------------------------------------------- Windows Eudora Frequently Asked Questions - Common Eudora for Windows Errors http://eudora.com/techsupport/win/faq/ ----------------------------------------------------------- The image below is the configuration of a Gigabit NIC (see b. above: Last edited by Copenhagen; 07-29-2006 at 03:12 PM. |

FAQ: Solving problems caused by email scanning etc.
Eudora is more susceptible to problems arising from email scanning than Outlook Express/Thunderbird. If you watch the dialogs of these programs when they are retrieving mail, they pick up one account, one folder at a time. Eudora picks up many accounts and many mailboxes simultaneously - it is multithreaded. The default number of threads is 10, but many more can be added. The email scanners basically create a proxy server that is placed in between the mail stream being retrieved and Eudora. Here they process the mail being retrieved before it reaches Eudora. The problem is that these scanners cannot keep up with the fast multithreaded mail stream being retrieved by Eudora, and they subsequently create errors. (Note: this problem is unlikely on a dialup/modem system). Here is a workaround for this Eudora problem developed in cooperation with the staff of Computer Associates eTrust EZ AntiVirus. There is a likelihood that the workaround is also appropriate for problems caused by other anti-virus programs and other programs which have installed an LSP module in your Winsock stack. This article addresses a Eudora problem with threading (concurrent tasks) and LSP (Layered Service Provider) modules in the Winsock stack. These modules can be antivirus email scanning and other privacy or network security related software, VPN clients etc. Email scanning on eTrust EZ Antivirus is an LSP module. The problem results in random difficulties connecting to mail servers (a symptom could be error messages about "Socket operation on non-socket [10038]") and in random exceptions (crashes) of Eudora. This is especially an issue if there are multiple personalities (i.e. email addresses) being checked. Socket operation on non-socket is WINSOCK Error. Winsock (short for Windows Sockets) is the interface used by Windows network software to access network services, especially TCP/IP. Close Eudora and open Windows Explorer. In the extrastuff sub folder of the Eudora "Program Files" folder there is a file called esoteric.epi. Copy this file into the main Eudora folder (where Eudora.exe is located). Open Eudora and go to Tools > Options > Threading. Change the "Maximum number of concurrent tasks" value to "1". The original default value was "10". It is vital that the checkbox at Tools > Options > Threading "ignore idle time on manual check/sends" is NOT checked. The Tools > Options > Background Tasks option: "wait for _ seconds inactivity before processing/filtering downloaded messages" must be examined. This setting has a default value of 20 seconds - make sure that this default setting has not been changed to 0 (which is sometimes recommended to speed up mail checking). A value of "2" is a minimum. This Eudora Knowledgebase Document concerns a similar problem and suggests a similar solution: http://www.eudora.com/techsupport/kb/1820hq.html Performance Note: With only one thread to check mail, a single sluggish mail server among multiple mailservers to be checked, can slow down the mail checking process a lot. The other mail servers will have to wait "in line" until that sluggish mailserver has responded. With even just 2 threads the speed will pick up considerably as other mail servers will have a chance to "jump the line" and be processed while the slow server is still being processed. Testing has shown an increased risk of crashes and of connection problems with a setting of 2 concurrent tasks, but it might be worth trying on your system. More than 2 concurrent tasks is risky on systems that have experienced this problem. However, the actual number possible will vary from system to system and it is worth, for the sake of better performance, trying slightly larger numbers to see where the limit is on a particular system. Note: New information for users of Norton Anti-Virus: Eudora Forums > --== WINDOWS EUDORA ==-- > Technical Issues (crashing, error messages, migrating, etc.) Norton Antivirus email scanning is not compatible with Secured Socket Layer (SSL) http://eudorabb.qualcomm.com/showthread.php?t=4068 Also: Error 1054 is now also frequently associated with Norton antivirus and Gigabit NICs. Both scan checksums. Built in gigabit Ethernet NICs (especially on motherboards with Nvidia chipsets) have an advance configuration tab with the "Checksum Offload" option. Disable this option. See imaeg below. Last edited by Copenhagen; 11-12-2005 at 01:17 AM. |

FAQ: Resetting Eudora Settings
Many users try to solve problems by re-installing Eudora. This generally serves no useful purpose as Eudora isn't that kind of program. Instead, it is both much easier and more useful to reset the Eudora settings. This solves a large variety of problems. Doing this DOES NOT remove or change any of your mail account information And there is no risk of any kind involved, as the process saves a copy of your original Eudora.ini file as Eudini.sav, which you can restore. Start up Eudora. Hold down the keys CTRL and SHIFT, then go to Tools > Options. You will be asked if you want to reset your settings file - click Yes. Below is the dialog box: Last edited by Copenhagen; 07-09-2005 at 12:59 AM. |

FAQ: Recovering "lost" data
What happens when you delete a message is that all you do is delete it from Eudora's table of contents, the message is still there. When you compact mailboxes (either manually or by an automatic setting) the data is lost. If you have only recently deleted something you regret having deleted there is a method to recover the message(s) if they were located in the IN or Out mailboxes. Eudora (starting with Eudora version 6) keeps backup copies for you. These files can be identified by their .001 and .002 extensions. See here: http://eudora.com/techsupport/kb/2651hq.html http://eudora.com/techsupport/kb/2651hq.html If the message you have recently deleted is in another mailbox than IN or Out, and you have not compacted since the deletion, you can: 1)open the mbx file with a suitable text ediitor (like Notetab Light from http://www.notetab.com ) and add one character to the end of the last message and this will force Eudora to rebuild the toc file for the mailbox when it next opens or 2)back up the file, rename a copy of the mailbox (without renaming the TOC), and let Eudora generate a new TOC recovering all deleted messages. If you have the Leave Mail on Server option enabled you can backup the messages you have now, and then delete the lmos.dat files in your Eudora spool folder for each personality you have been using, and see whether there is still a copy of the message you are missing on the server. If nothing turns up you should contact your Internet Service Provider and ask about the extent of their backups and whether they can help you recover old messages. If your problem is that an Antivirus program has quarantined your mailbox, you can simply recover the file (mailbox) from quarantine and delete the infected messages. DO NOT have the preview pane enabled while you are reviewing the contents of the mailbox. See also: Eudora Forums > --== WINDOWS EUDORA ==-- > Technical Issues (crashing, error messages, migrating, etc.) FAQ: Missing Mailboxes after upgrade or moving to a new computer? http://eudorabb.qualcomm.com/showthread.php?t=4077 In the future the best thing is to backup your DATA! See: Eudora Forums > --== WINDOWS EUDORA ==-- > Technical Issues (crashing, error messages, migrating, etc.) FAQ: Need to move Eudora to a new computer or Backup your Data? http://eudorabb.qualcomm.com/showthread.php?t=4055 See also: Missing Mail / Corrupt Mailboxes (Win) http://www.eudora.com/techsupport/kb/2067hq.html Note about Undelete utilities: It is true that there are "undelete" programs that can recover data, but they are not very useful for a number of reasons. What happens when you delete something is that all you do is delete it from the computer's table of contents, the file is still there. But the file gets overwritten with time after it has been compacted, defragmented etc. You MAY, however, still have some recent data that can be recovered this way. But, you will need the help of experts (there are companies that specialize in recovering lost data) to find and identify it. The reason for this is that Windows does not necessarily place data contiguously (located together). The same file can have bits and pieces spread all over the place. And today's operating systems and programs are big and their files take up a lot of room on your multi Gigabyte hard drive. There is a slight diffeence if you have the FAT32 or NTFS files systems. NTFS (only on NT/WinY2K and XP) is less fragmented and also easier to defragment and is considered much safer (Google the topic for more info about why). For some unexplained reason most preinstalled XP installations are not NTFS. Last edited by Copenhagen; 03-24-2006 at 11:55 PM. |
